Groove-O-Rama - GENEROUS MARIA
@ Sticky Fingers, Gothenburg
Friday October 6th 2000

Here we go again, another Groove-O-Rama fest with an interesting lineup. First up of tonight´s three bands was Generous Maria.

So far I haven´t had a chance to go to any of their gigs, and they have played in my neck of the woods a couple of times so that have kinda bummed me out. Their ”Strict Nurse” are one of the better swedish demos I´ve heard in a while so I had pretty high expectations...

Right from the start of their set I knew I wasn´t going to be disapointed, they were even better live than on their demo... mucho heavy with an astounding groove... I would place the sound of the Generous Maria live experience somewhere between Mustasch and Awesome Machine (two other great local bands)... the same kinda feeling for heavy grooves as Mustasch and hinting at the energy of The Awesome Machine... in one of the songs they even got a groove that made me think of High On Fire, and then we´re talking heavy...

Most of the songs were new experiences to me (and the rest of the audience?), the only one I had heard before was ”Strict Nurse”, and it´s a good one, but I think I like their newer material even better... songs like ”Dumdum Bullet” and ”Mushroom Clouds” truly rocked...

Goran Florstrom, the singer, got a lot of presence on stage... He might not be as ”wild” as Lasse of Awesome Machine, but even at Goran´s level he has more of an interesting stage persona than most other singers in the genre... and he´s backed by a band that seems like they played together for a very long time... Great Show Guys!!!

I hope the Generous Maria dudes gets a chance to record these songs soon... I also hope that some recordcompany will have the good sense to release `em... soon...

Generous Maria... what can I say... Killer gig! This was the best gig from these dudes that I’ve seen so far, the music was both more psychedelic and heavier. And they also had a new guy on guitar and he seemed to fit perfectly in the Generous Maria soundscapes.
